Project Description

Front Border for a Cottage in The Chilterns

The partially shaded area to the front of this pretty cottage in Buckinghamshire was looking very sorry for itself and lacking impact. The soil was tough, with clay and flint to dig through, but with plenty of manure and elbow grease, we were able to get the border planted up. A tired looking path was replaced and redirected to increase border depth so that more substantial foundation planting could nestle at the foot of the property.

Shade-loving cottage favourites have been introduced, with foxgloves, Heuchera, Brunnera, Geraniums and Hosta weaving through an evergreen anchoring of Buxus cones and Sarcococca (Christmas Box). For later in the season at the sunnier end of the border, autumn tones of gold and red are provided by Rudbeckia, Sedum matrona and Stipa tenuissima surrounding a coppery-toned Acer.

The client is thrilled with their new front garden and passers-by have been very complementary, which is always a great endorsement.
