Garden Design Fees

As every project is different, your garden design fees will be quoted once we have had our initial meeting and tailored to the complexity of the project. For instance, sloping sites or gardens with particularly challenging conditions will involve far more design and planning than a simple flat site. Do you want a bespoke water feature perhaps? Or, you may want lots of plants, which means a lot more time for the planting design stage. Every garden design project is exciting and unique and requires varying levels of planning and construction detail.

How much does a garden design cost?

The fees you pay your designer to plan your garden will depend on:

  • The size of your garden and how much landscaping you wish to introduce.
  • How level your garden is. Gardens with steep slopes or awkward gradients will require more detailed consideration.
  • The level of input your would like from your designer. See the Garden Design Process page for more information.

Once Chris has met with you and visited your garden, you will be provided with a detailed quotation for services, with options for either a design only service, or design and build option.

The Planting Design Service fee is worked out according to the size of the area to be planted, at a typical rate of £15+VAT per m2. A minimum charge of £500+VAT applies to all projects.

The Initial Consultation fee is £150 + travel time (pro rata) +VAT for a 2-hour appointment. This fee is payable before or on the day of the meeting.

How much will the landscaping cost?

Again, the cost of building a garden varies according to the size of the garden, the need for retaining walls and steps, water features, and the premium value of certain materials. Redeveloping your entire garden using professional landscapers can range from £15k for a small garden up to six figures, but it is possible to create a lovely garden for less, especially if you are a competent DIY-er or opt for an Eco-Garden approach. For an idea of what your garden may cost, imagine building an extension on your house and the level of your desired finish; the costs will be very similar. Not all landscapers are the same standard; only some offer a craftsman-like service and full attention to detail.

As a garden designer, I don’t make any commission from landscapers, or receive any kickbacks for passing on work. I will always act impartially on your behalf to secure the best contractor for your project. The final say will come down to whom you most wish to work with and their price. Your contract will be with them, and you would pay them directly for any work they undertake.

If you don’t have vast amounts to spend on your garden, or intend to DIY, then we recommend our initial consultation for ideas and inspiration. Just 2 hours together can help you get to grips with your garden plans, and an idea of the cost for completing the work. If you need further help, our Design Only service will provide you with a more accurate plan to work to.

Finally, it’s always worth remembering that a garden full of greenery will cost far less than a garden full of expensive paving and fancy lighting. If you want an amazing garden at a lower cost and low carbon footprint, think plants first!

The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just on the body, but the soul.
